English trans teen stabbed nine times blamed for own assault [QueerAF]

  • A trans teenager in the UK was stabbed nine times in a brutal hate crime, but transphobic narratives have emerged blaming her for the attack (see PAPER REVIEW for more). The 18-year-old victim, who thought she was attending a social event, was ambushed by a group of teens who shouted transmisogynistic slurs and then shared footage of the attack online. The attackers, convicted this week of grievous bodily harm, received sentences of up to eight years.

The violence stemmed from the victim’s prior consensual intimacy with one of the attackers, who later learned she was trans and accused her of deception. The incident has drawn attention to updated Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) guidance on “deception as to sex,” which suggests that failure to disclose one’s transgender identity could override consent.

Despite being a victim of sexual violence—she was secretly filmed and the video uploaded—the GC cult, aided by the media as usual, have portrayed her as the aggressor.

Northern Ireland Executive refuse to release medical advice behind puberty blocker ban, claiming not in public interest [Belfast Live]

  • The Northern Ireland Executive has refused to release evidence used to justify an indefinite ban on puberty blockers for trans youth, claiming it is “not in the public interest.” Despite citing “openness, transparency, and accountability” as important principles, officials argue that sharing the advice would hinder “frank and honest” deliberations within the Executive. This is, of course, a total nonsense.

This refusal also comes despite overwhelming opposition to the ban in a UK Government consultation, where 59% of respondents disagreed with the decision. Critics, including LGBTQIA+ advocates like Alexa Moore from The Rainbow Project, have condemned the lack of transparency, calling it “unacceptable” and pointing out that such secrecy would not be tolerated in other areas of healthcare.

The Executive’s reliance on alleged medical advice that contradicts international consensus and exclusively harms trans youth is being hidden from the public because they know they cannot scientifically justify their decision, raising yet more serious concerns about accountability in decisions impacting vulnerable communities.

Human Rights Watch World report damming on UK LGBTQ+ attacks [Human Rights Watch]

  • On sexual orientation and gender identity, the report says, “In May, after his visit to the UK, the UN independent expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity warned that abusive rhetoric by politicians and in the media was creating a climate of hostility against LGBT people in the UK and contributing to a surge in anti-LGBT violence. He also acknowledged the UK’s valuable collection of disaggregated data on LGBT people but expressed concern at the government’s undermining of protections for the rights of trans women and overrepresentation of LGBT people among the unhoused population.”

Ideology will not influence approach to transgender prisoners, says Northern Ireland Justice Minister [Belfast Telegraph]

  • Justice Minister Naomi Long has affirmed that decisions regarding transgender prisoners in Northern Ireland will be based on safety and individual risk assessments, not ideology. Responding to anti-trans DUP MLA Joanne Bunting’s call to bar “biological male inmates” from women’s prisons, Long criticised the framing of the issue as part of a “ludicrous culture war.”

The minister highlighted that each case would be assessed on its own merits, ensuring safety and dignity for all prisoners, including transgender people, who she noted are among the most vulnerable in the prison population. Long dismissed claims of a “predators’ charter” as “scurrilous” and reaffirmed her commitment to justice, fairness, and equality.

USA: Gender-affirming hormone therapy significantly improves emotional health in trans youth [Science Direct]

  • A new study published in The Journal of Adolescent Health confirms that gender-affirming hormone (GAH) therapy significantly improves the emotional health of transgender and non-binary (TNB) youth over a 24-month period. The study, which followed 315 participants aged 12–20, found that improvements in appearance congruence (alignment between gender identity and physical appearance) were strongly associated with enhanced psychological well-being, social satisfaction, and self-efficacy.

Conducted across four US clinical sites, the study revealed significant reductions in negative affect and social perception issues over time. These findings reinforce the life-changing benefits of GAH therapy, particularly for improving emotional functioning and quality of life among TNB youth.

Despite ongoing contrived political debates, the evidence continues to show that providing access to gender-affirming care is critical to the well-being of trans youth, underscoring the importance of inclusive healthcare policies.

USA: Montana House endorses ban on trans bathroom use [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • Montana’s Republican-led House has endorsed a bill prohibiting transgender people from using bathrooms in public buildings that do not match their sex assigned at birth. The legislation, which would impact daily life for transgender lawmakers like Rep. Zooey Zephyr and nonbinary Rep. SJ Howell, follows a failed attempt to restrict Zephyr’s restroom use in the state Capitol. Both lawmakers urged their colleagues to reject the bill, criticising the baseless framing of transgender people as a threat to women. As usual, no suggestions have been made on how this will be policed.

USA: Georgians agree there’s transgender discrimination, yet favour restrictions [The Atlanta Journal-Constitution]

  • A new poll by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reveals that while 65% of Georgia voters acknowledge significant discrimination against transgender people, the majority are happy with that and support restrictive measures. Over 70% favour requiring transgender girls and women to play sports according to their birth certificate gender. Additionally, 54% support limiting bathroom access based on birth certificate gender. As trans people keep saying, they know the damage they are causing, they just don’t care.

India: Transgender high priest leads community in holy dip at Ganga [Hindustan Times]

  • In a landmark event for the transgender community Tina Ma, Maha Mandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhada and a member of the Uttar Pradesh Kinnar Welfare Board, led a large group of transgender disciples and community members in a holy dip at the Ganga in Prayagraj on the occasion of Paush Purnima. The ritual, performed near the Sangam at Ram Ghat, marked a significant step toward greater acceptance of the transgender community in religious spaces.

Pakistan: Shunned and shamed, Pakistan’s trans community finally gets life-saving TB support [The Guardian]

  • Trans people in Pakistan face one of the country’s highest TB rates but often avoid treatment due to stigma and abuse in clinics. Programs like the Dopasi Foundation and Dareecha Male Health Society are providing vital TB screenings and safe spaces, funded by the Stop TB Partnership. Despite progress, trans people still encounter extreme prejudice in accessing healthcare. Advocates stress the need for systemic reforms to ensure equitable treatment and dignity for Pakistan’s marginalised trans community.

Claim to ‘save women’s sports’ revealed as rooted in sexism and homophobia, not fairness [PsyPost]

  • A new study challenges the “save women’s sports” movement, revealing opposition to transgender athletes’ rights stems from sexism, adherence to traditional gender norms, and homophobia. Researchers found those opposing trans inclusion in sports were also more likely to undervalue female athletes, reject equal media coverage for women’s sports, and support restrictive sex testing.

The study shows these views are not motivated by genuine concern for women’s sports but by a desire to uphold outdated gender norms. It concludes that the rhetoric of “saving women’s sports” is more of a political and ideological project than a legitimate effort to promote equity in women’s athletics.

One perfect example of all this played out in the papers this week. Arsenal women appointed Renee Slegers to be their permanent manager and both the Mail and Telegraph ignored this massive story. Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the world, regularly playing in front of tens of thousands of fans. When minnows, Sutton United, who play in front of crowds that don’t even reach 100, appointed a trans woman as their manager, both papers were outraged, especially the Telegraph’s Oliver Brown.

US House passes bill to ban transgender students from women’s sports

  • The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives has passed legislation barring transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports at federally funded schools and universities.

The bill defines sex based on reproductive biology at birth. However, it is reportedly unlikely to pass the Senate.

Why Hear Me Roar is a must-watch for trans equality [Out.com]

  • Review summary from Out.com: The upcoming film Hear Me Roar brings to life the groundbreaking legal battle of Elizabeth Bellinger, a British trans woman whose fight for marriage recognition paved the way for the 2004 Gender Recognition Act. Starring Rebecca Root, Christopher Eccleston, and Emma Thompson, the film recounts Bellinger’s courageous journey from living stealth to challenging British law after her marriage was deemed invalid.

Though the courts initially ruled against her, Bellinger’s case set a precedent that transformed legal rights for trans Britons. In an era of growing pushback on trans equality, Hear Me Roar serves as a timely reminder of how individual voices can spark monumental change.

A release date has not yet been announced.

Karla Sofía Gascón makes Bafta history

  • Karla Sofía Gascón, 52, has become the first transgender woman nominated for the Best Leading Actress category at the Baftas. The Spanish actress earned recognition for her role in Emilia Pérez, a Mexican musical comedy about a cartel boss transitioning to escape retribution.

Gascón’s nomination follows similar accolades at the Cannes Film Festival and Golden Globes, highlighting her impact on global cinema.

This nomination has sparked yet another tantrum from gender-critical groups, with organisations like Sex Matters criticising the inclusion of trans performers in female categories. If successful, Gascón would be the first transgender winner in this category, and is competing against Cynthia Erivo, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Mikey Madison, Saoirse Ronan, and Demi Moore.

The Baftas will take place on 16 February.

UK: Scotland advances LGBT-inclusive education with new national guidance [tie]

  • The Scottish Government has published comprehensive guidance on LGBT-inclusive education, setting clear expectations for all local authority-run schools to integrate LGBT themes across curricula. The guidance fulfils a 2018 recommendation from a multi-stakeholder working group and emphasises meaningful, age-appropriate learning that reflects diversity throughout the academic year, rather than as standalone events.

Key measures include mandatory professional learning for teachers, a prohibition on withdrawing students from LGBT-inclusive content, and integrating these lessons into broader school values and anti-bullying strategies. Schools are also urged to adopt preventive measures against prejudice-based bullying while empowering students and families to report incidents.

UK: MP believed to be behind Commons spiking [Mail on Sunday]

  • An MP is under investigation after a woman alleged her drink was spiked with a date-rape drug at the Strangers’ Bar in the House of Commons. The incident, reported on January 7, led to the bar’s closure while safety measures are reviewed. The Parliamentary researcher who made the claim recognised the alleged perpetrator’s MP lanyard but did not identify their name or party. The Metropolitan Police and Parliament are investigating, with no arrests yet made.

UK: Record numbers forced into mixed-sex hospital wards [The Daily Telegraph]

  • Nearly 50,000 NHS patients were placed in mixed-sex hospital wards in the year to November 2024, marking a record high since the practice was largely banned in 2010. NHS England data revealed 49,100 breaches, over double the 19,700 recorded annually before the pandemic. November 2024 alone saw 3,983 instances, the highest for any November since records began in 2011.

Charities and patient groups, including the Patients Association, have expressed alarm, calling on the government and NHS leaders to address the decline in privacy and dignity. NHS England acknowledged the challenge, citing extreme service pressures.

The crisis coincides with severe NHS overcrowding, with only 4% of beds unoccupied last week, leaving some trusts without available beds. Reports from the Royal College of Nursing highlight collapsing care standards, including patients dying in overcrowded corridors, further exacerbating concerns.

Amidst all this, Wes Streeting wants to find private rooms for trans patients to ‘protect’ cis ones.

Nigeria: FG bans homosexuality, cross-dressing in military under revised terms [THISDAY]

  • The Nigerian federal government has prohibited military personnel from engaging in homosexuality, cross-dressing, and other behaviours under the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service (HAFCTCS) 2024. It was signed by President Bola Tinubu on 16 December 2024.

The document explicitly bars participation in LGBTQIA2S+ activities, relationships with subordinates or their spouses, body piercings, tattoos, and drunkenness. Personnel are also forbidden from joining secret societies, political parties, or engaging in private businesses. Additionally, misuse of government property and failure to meet financial obligations, such as licensing and insurance, will now be considered serious offences.

Drag artists warn of rising bigotry as they honour The Vivienne [The Guardian Australia]

  • Drag artists have highlighted a growing tide of bigotry against their community during RuPaul’s DragCon UK, held in London following the death of The Vivienne, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. The Vivienne passed away earlier this month aged 32.

Fellow performers, including Danny Beard, Juno Birch, and Ginger Johnson, linked the rise in hostility to increasing transphobia, with Beard describing current anti-drag sentiments as “rightwing vile propaganda.” Birch noted that LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly trans people, now face unprecedented scrutiny, while Johnson lamented the recycled homophobia that continues to target drag.

UK: Women held the power in Celtic Britain, archaeologists find [Times, Telegraph, Mail, Guardian]

  • New research suggests women in Iron Age Britain held significant social and political power, with land often inherited through maternal lines. Analysis of over 50 ancient genomes from Dorset burial sites showed matrilocality, where husbands joined their wives’ communities upon marriage. These findings challenge assumptions about female leaders like Boudica being outliers, matching up with Roman accounts of astonishment at women in leadership roles. The study also found similar patterns across other regions of Britain and noted that women were more frequently buried with high-status goods than men.

THE PAPERS

There were a total of 15 articles this week about trans people, a number that was inflated by the trial of the group of people who stabbed a trans teen for the ‘crime’ of being trans.

The Times and Telegraph share this week’s honour of ‘Biggest Danger’ with five each, although only the Times published yet another vile opinion piece.

The Guardian’s month-long run without anything about trans people came to an end as they covered the sentencing of the attackers mentioned above. With Sonia Sodha’s one column missing in action since August, perhaps they have finally caught themselves on.

The Mail were too obsessed with Hitler this week (seriously) to go after trans people in any meaningful fashion. With 14 pages on Saturday, plus a front page, and eight on Sunday fawning over various Nazis, they only had time for four articles about trans people.

Daily Mail full front page on Hitler with a quote calling him an 'angel'

Weirdly, the Mail did not cover the story about the German neo-Nazi who claims to be a woman after he was sent to a male prison. That story was in the Telegraph.

Civil servants won’t be labelled transphobic for views on gender Daily Mail13 Jan 2025By Sam Merriman Social Affairs Correspondent CIVIL servants will no longer be called ‘transphobic’ for expressing gender-critical views under new guidelines. Two departments will amend their policies on gender following a tribunal brought by an employee. Former civil servant Eleanor Frances claimed she had ‘no choice but to resign’ after she faced a backlash over her gender-critical beliefs. On Saturday Ms Frances said she had reached a £116,000 settlement with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). She said she raised concerns about government departments embracing ‘politicised concepts and language’. She also claimed staff were afraid to speak out due to a so-called ‘climate of fear’. Ms Frances reportedly said gender policies had been adopted without proper consultation after trans rights campaigners Stonewall held a workplace assessment. She took DCMS and DSIT to an employment tribunal last year for victimisation, protected disclosure detriment, unfair constructive dismissal and discrimination on the grounds of philosophical belief. The case has now been settled without liability, with the departments agreeing to pay Ms Frances £116,749 plus tax. Both departments said they would review ‘gender assignment’ policies following the settlement. The review’s results will be circulated to all government departments. Susannah Storey and Sarah Munby, the permanent secretaries of DCMS and DSIT, said: ‘Our departments are working together to introduce a revised gender reassignment policy, informed by a new central model policy. ‘A well-functioning civil service is one that allows its civil servants to safely hold, voice, discuss or challenge any lawful perspective without fear.’ Posting on X, Ms Frances said while investigations were ongoing she was given ‘unsubstantiated and derogatory feedback’ by bosses over her views on the gender policies. Toby Young of the Free Speech Union told the Telegraph: ‘The fact that the civil service has agreed to rip up its trans policy and start again shows just how poorly written it was in the first place. It’s another example of equality law being interpreted as woke activists would like it to be rather than as it is.’ ‘A climate of fear’ Article Name:Civil servants won’t be labelled transphobic for views on gender Publication:Daily Mail Author:By Sam Merriman Social Affairs Correspondent Start Page:24 End Page:24

Maloney gives backing to women’s sport trans ban The Daily Telegraph13 Jan 2025By Tom Morgan Kellie Maloney, the transgender former boxing promoter, has clarified her belief that any athlete who has gone through male puberty should be banned from women’s sport. The 71-year-old, who transitioned in 2014 after being known as Frank, also says, after talking to her daughters, that female-only toilets need improved protections. Maloney had previously waded into the febrile Olympic boxing row, expressing concern for the welfare of Imane Khelif and Lin Yuting as they were engulfed in controversy. Algeria’s Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin are not trans, but a frenzied debate raged over the International Olympic Committee clearing the duo to compete in the women’s boxing in Paris. The pair had been disqualified from the Women’s World Championships in 2023 for failing to meet eligibility criteria on sex. Maloney says the situation, however, is clear-cut for trans athletes, writing in The Sunday Times “Life in a Day” column that she is “against trans women who’ve gone through male puberty taking part in women’s sport”. Maloney enjoyed a successful career as a boxing promoter, managing David Haye and Lennox Lewis, and writes in the column: “If there were a pill that would have made me happy as a man, I’d have taken it.” She detailed how she has listened to the opinion of her three daughters in the Algarve before drawing conclusions about women’s sport and female toilets. “I listen to my daughters and my friends here in Portugal – the girls are adamant that if someone wants to keep their penis they shouldn’t use women’s changing rooms,” Maloney writes. “That doesn’t always go down well with the trans community, but I think they’re right. I’m also against trans women who’ve gone through male puberty taking part in women’s sport. “We have to accept that although our brains are female, we weren’t female from birth and our bodies are stronger.” Article Name:Maloney gives backing to women’s sport trans ban Publication:The Daily Telegraph Author:By Tom Morgan Start Page:19 End Page:19

Transgender woman stabbed 14 times Ellie McDonald An 18-year-old transgender woman was stabbed 14 times at a roller skating party in a transphobic assault planned on Snapchat after she lied about her gender, a court has heard. The teenager was attacked by a group of mask-wearing youths who lured her into a car park after inviting her to a roller disco at Harrow Leisure Centre in northwest London on February 10. The attackers had turned on the woman after a member of the group, with whom she had a sexual relationship, was told she was transgender. The other group members set about creating a ruse to “beat her up”, the sentencing hearing was told. Summer Betts-Ramsey, 20, who had brought a knife and stabbed the woman, Bradley Harris, 18, Camron Osei, 18, Shiloh Hindes, 18, and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named were all dressed in masks and hoods, and were waiting for her at the bus stop. She was taken to a nearby car park and “immediately attacked”. She had no time to say anything or do anything to defend herself. Betts-Ramsey took out a knife and stabbed her at least 14 times. The other youths kicked and punched her for about 45 seconds before fleeing the scene, Deanna Heer KC, for the prosecution, told the Old Bailey. The teenager was taken to hospital and survived her injuries. Betts-Ramsey, Harris, Osei, Hindes and the 17-year-old boy have admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Betts-Ramsey also admitted possession of a knife, and a 17-year-old girl has admitted robbing the victim’s handbag and possession of a class B drug. After the attack, the woman told the court that she now found it “difficult to trust people” and had “thick scars” as a result of her injuries. In January 2024 the woman was with Harris at his house, but while there a mutual friend called Harris telling him she was “trans”. “Having been attacked in the past because of her transgender identity, she denied it,” Heer said. The woman then performed oral sex on Harris. Soon afterwards, another friend told Harris that she was a “tranny”. She denied it again, but when Harris picked up a knife and said, “I’ll stab you if you lie,” she admitted that she was transgender before Harris told her to leave, the court was told. When Harris informed the group that she had lied to him, they turned on her, Heer said. Betts-Ramsey posted a threat to stab the woman on a Snapchat group with the other attackers. Members of the group bragged about the assault and posted footage on social media, the court was told. Judge Philip Katz KC is due to sentence the group later this week.
Call for tight control of crowdfunds A women’s rights activist wants accountability for publicly funded legal cases. By Catherine Baksi Raquel Rosario Sánchez had a two-year ordeal with the Legal Ombudsman after complaining about a law firm’s spending Tighter oversight should be applied to lawyers handling crowdfunded cases, according to a women’s rights activist who claims that the law firm she instructed “burnt through” £34,000 in six months. Raquel Rosario Sánchez also calls for greater support for lay people engaging with the Legal Ombudsman’s complaint process after a two-year ordeal that she says felt like a “horror story” and could have driven others to “suicide”. Rosario Sánchez won a high-profile legal battle with two others from a feminist student society, Women Talk Back, against the University of Bristol student union. Officials had sanctioned the group for running women-only meetings after it excluded a male-born transwoman from talks on rape and sexual assault. Union officials demanded that Rosario Sánchez, the group’s president, resign and barred her from leadership posts for two years. They also ordered the society’s members to undergo diversity and inclusivity training. After the society crowdfunded to take legal action over claims of discrimination, union chiefs backed down and agreed that female student societies can exclude transgender women. In 2021, when the students began crowdfunding on the specialist legal website CrowdJustice, they instructed the law firm Harrison Clark Rickerbys, which has ten offices around the country. Under the site’s rules, money raised goes directly to the nominated law firm, rather than to those taking the claim. But when the claimants realised that the firm had spent the £34,000 donated in just six months, they instructed a different practice. Rosario Sánchez then complained about the firm to the Legal Ombudsman, which concluded that it had provided an “unreasonable service”. Among other findings, the ombudsman ruled that the firm had failed to provide cost estimates and asked only Rosario Sánchez for its outstanding fees when there had been three claimants. In a decision accepted by the firm, the ombudsman recommended that it should waive its £8,414.31 outstanding fees and pay £400 compensation to Rosario Sánchez. But Rosario Sánchez tells The Times that after she initially registered the complaint with the ombudsman, the law firm went to “extreme ends to shut it down”. She alleges that the firm singled her out among the three litigants to pursue for legal fees, pressurising her with litigation and settlement offers to drop the complaint. The Times has seen three emails sent from the firm, which appear to offer to discontinue its claim against her if she withdrew the complaint to the ombudsman and offering to pay her £1,500 in “full and final settlement of claims and complaints”. Rosario Sánchez says that she only became aware of the firm’s claim against her when the ombudsman said that it had been told of a judgment in default in the case. The firm, she alleges, had tried to use the default judgment to argue that the ombudsman had no authority to deal with the complaint because the issues had already been decided by a court. “The Legal Ombudsman scheme cannot work if members of the public like me are subjected to tactics meant to destroy our lives,” Rosario Sánchez says. “The last two years have felt like a horror story. All I wanted was an investigation into what happened to the money that the public donated.” Rosario Sánchez calls for tighter control over how law firms deal with money in crowdfunded cases and says there needs to be support for people making complaints to the ombudsman. ‘All I wanted was an investigation into what happened to the money’ “The dynamics are too asymmetric between the lawyers and the lay client who does not have the language and expertise. The pressure I was under would have driven some people to suicide,” Rosario Sánchez says. In a statement, Harrison Clark Rickerbys denied the allegations of wrongdoing, but said that it could not comment further owing to professional obligations of client confidentiality. It added that the firm would “fully cooperate with any information request received from our regulator as this is the appropriate forum to deal with matters of this nature”. Mark Carlisle, the founder of Check My Legal Fees, a subsidiary of the law firm Richard Slade & Partners, which acted for Rosario Sánchez to set aside the default judgment, stresses that scrutiny of law firm charging is “particularly important where the fees are met by crowdfunding” to avoid the risk that such cases are seen as a “cash cow”. Crowdfunding, an unregulated form of litigation funding that allows claimants to take cases with the help of donations from the public, has previously raised concerns. It is one of the areas being considered by the Civil Justice Council’s review of litigation funding, including whether there should be regulation. Carlisle also agrees that the ombudsman process can “sometimes be hard to navigate for a lay person”. Solicitors, he adds, should not be allowed “to turn it into just another adversarial process because that, inevitably, stacks the odds in their favour”. But Sarah Gilbert, a senior manager at the ombudsman, argues that the office recognises “the difficulty that can be experienced by some customers, often during some of the most difficult and stressful periods of their lives and the service has trained individuals to support them”. She accepts that “more needs to be done to ensure consumers are getting a good standard of service and that complaints handling procedures are improved” and says the ombudsman is working with legal regulators and others to drive higher standards.

Teen knifed at roller disco after row about her gender Mob targeted girl, 18, over her trans identity lie Daily Mail16 Jan 2025Crime and Security Editor By Rebecca Camber Vicious: Summer Betts-Ramsey admitted the assault ATTACKER A TRANSGENDER girl was stabbed nine times in a revenge attack for lying about her gender identity before performing a sex act on a boy, a court has heard. The 18-year-old aspiring model was lured to a roller-skating disco before she then was set upon by a masked mob screaming ‘tranny’. Five teenagers punched, kicked and stamped on the victim, who collapsed after being knifed in the brutal 45-second assault, plotted on Snapchat and then filmed. The victim was kicked at least seven times by Summer Betts-Ramsey before she pulled out a knife, the Old Bailey was told. While the teenager lay helpless on February 10 last year, Betts-Ramsey allegedly lunged at her 14 times, causing injuries to the nose, thigh, hand, and buttocks. Other teenagers beat her with roller skates before snatching her handbag. The victim, who cannot be named, survived the attack at Harrow Leisure Centre, north-west London, after a member of the public intervened. Betts-Ramsey, now 20, posted footage from the vicious attack with laughing emojis, telling friends: ‘I’m going jail... bro I stabbed her.’ The court heard Bradley Harris, 18, arranged the attack after the victim, days earlier, had denied she was transgender before performing an oral sex act on him. Harris secretly recorded the encounter on a Facetime video call and a friend told him the victim was transgender. She admitted this to Harris after he threatened her at knifepoint and she apologised. But Harris sought revenge – with Betts-Ramsey being heard on the phone to say: ‘I have to go to Harrow to beat up a f ****** tranny bro.’ The victim said her ordeal has left her suffering panic attacks, struggling to sleep and in fear of ‘I’m going to jail ... I stabbed her’ leaving the house – while she may not be able to work as a model. She added: ‘The incident has resulted in thick scars. I have experienced animosity towards me being transgender but I never thought anyone would have so much hatred for me.’ Betts-Ramsey, of Barnet, will be sentenced today along with 18-year-olds Harris, from Harrow, Camron Osei, from Tadworth, Surrey, and Shiloh Hindes, from Southwark, plus a 17-year-old boy. All admitted grievous bodily harm. A 17-year-old girl admitted robbery by taking the handbag. Transgender star nominated for best leading actress in Bafta first The Daily Telegraph16 Jan 2025By Craig Simpson Karla Sofía Gascón, a transgender woman, is up for best leading actress at the Baftas BAFTA has included a transgender woman in its leading actress category for the first time. Karla Sofía Gascón, 52, a Spanish actress, starred in the Mexican musical comedy Emilia Pérez, a film about a cartel boss who transitions from a man to a woman to escape vengeful criminals. The British Academy is the latest film body to include the trans performer in a best actress category, following the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globes. The nomination comes after Bafta introduced the gender-neutral title of “performer” in 2024 for the benefit of winners who did not wish to have either “actor” or “actress” on their award. It is understood that Bafta bosses are continuing to ponder the possibility of removing actor and actress categories in favour of gender-neutral categories, although this has not been confirmed by the Academy. Gascón could become the first trans best actress at the Baftas if they win over Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Marianne Jean-baptiste for Hard Truths, Mikey Madison for Anora, Saoirseronan for The Outrun and Demi Moore for The Substance. Gascón won the best actress award at Cannes in 2024. Gender-critical campaigners questioned the decision, with the campaign group Sex Matters warning that opening female categories to trans performers was an “illustration of the way trans ideology takes from women and gives to men”. Revenge led to ‘abhorrent’ transphobic stabbing attack on woman The Guardian17 Jan 2025Matthew Weaver A woman who carried out a transphobic stabbing attack motivated by a “distorted notion of revenge” has been sentenced to more than eight years in youth detention. The victim, a transgender woman who was 18 at the time, was stabbed nine times in Harrow last February in an attack involving five young people wearing masks, the Old Bailey heard. She only survived because passersby stepped in to help, the court was told. After stabbing the victim nine times, Summer Betts-Ramsey, 20, told a friend “It deserved it”. She admitted possessing a knife and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Sentencing her to eight and a half years in youth detention, of which, four and half must be served in custody, Mr Justice Katz described the attack as “abhorrent”. He said it was motivated by a “distorted notion of revenge”, in part linked to the woman’s gender identity. The judge added that Betts-Ramsey, from Barnet, was a “dangerous offender”. Three other youths involved in the attack Bradley Harris, from Harrow; Camron Osei, from Tadworth, Surrey; and Shiloh Hindes, from Southwark, who are all 18, were sentenced to three years in youth detention. A fifth member of the gang, a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named because of his age, was given a youth rehabilitation order. The gang were angered by the victim lying about her gender identity after she kissed Harris and gave him oral sex, the court heard. Harris was then told the woman was transgender, and he challenged her about it – which she initially denied “having been attacked in the past because of her transgender identity,” prosecutor Deanna Heer KC told the Old Bailey. She admitted she was transgender when Harris threatened to stab her, the court heard. The gang then took to Snapchat to plan to “beat her up” after luring her to a roller disco in Harrow. Phone evidence revealed that during a call, Betts-Ramsey told someone: “I have to go to Harrow to beat up some … a fucking tranny bro,” the court heard. As well as being repeatedly stabbed, the victim was punched, kicked and stamped on while transphobic slurs were shouted. In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said she is living with “thick scars” and still struggles to sleep after the incident. Members of the group later bragged about the assault and taunted their victim, posting footage of what they had done on social media. 13 years for the trans hate mob who knifed teenager for ‘lying about her gender identity’ Daily Mail17 Jan 2025By Rebecca Camber Crime and Security Editor ATTACK ON CCTV Merciless assault: Five masked, hooded gang members kick the victim, who is lying on the ground THE sickening moment a teenage mob stabbed a trans girl nine times for lying about her gender was revealed last night. The 18-year-old aspiring model, who had performed a sex act on a boy after denying she was transgender, was lured to a roller disco where she was set upon by a masked group screaming ‘tranny’. Five teenagers punched, kicked and stamped on the victim. In the brutal 45-second revenge attack, which was filmed on Snapchat, the victim was punched to the ground and kicked at least seven times by Summer Betts-Ramsey, 19. Then, while the victim lay helpless, Betts-Ramsey stabbed her 14 times in the nose, thigh, hand, and buttocks. Other teenagers rained down blows with ‘great excitement’, beating her with a pair of roller skates and boots before snatching her handbag and fleeing, leaving her in a pool of blood. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, only survived the attack on February 10 last year at Harrow Leisure Centre, north-west London, after a passerby stopped Betts-Ramsey stamping on her head before calling for an ambulance. Yesterday, at the Old Bailey, the perpetrators were detained for a total of 13 years in a young offenders’ institution. The CCTV shows the masked, hooded gang lying in wait, dancing in excitement in a car park as the smiling, unsuspecting victim approaches. In an orgy of violence, all five teenagers piled in while she lay curled up in a ball. ‘It’s sickening to watch,’ said Judge Philip Katz, KC, who added that the ‘abhorrent’ attack could have been fatal. ‘The victim was viciously assaulted in public by five young persons each intending for her to be caused really serious injury. ‘She was kicked and punched to the ground, they then continued to punch her, and she was stabbed repeatedly. She presented no threat to anyone. She did nothing to provoke the attack or to justify it in any way.’ The judge said the group were motivated ‘by a distorted version of revenge’, and described the planning of the attack on Snapchat as ‘poisonous’. Betts-Ramsey, now 20, posted footage of the attack with laughing emojis, boasting to friends: ‘I’m going jail... bro I stabbed her 12 times.’ She was already under a community order for previous convictions for robbery and battery. Judge Katz sentenced her to four and a half years in a young offenders’ institution plus another four years on licence. He said: ‘Her gloating in the aftermath of the attack was shamelessly hateful and dehumanising.’ Three boys, Shiloh Hindes, Bradley Harris, and Camron Osei, all 18, were detained for three years in a young offenders’ institution. A 17-year-old boy who cannot be named was given an 18-month youth rehabilitation order. All five admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Harris plotted the attack because the victim had denied being trans when she performed a sex act on him days earlier. He had recorded the encounter, and a friend who saw the clip told him she had lied. Harris then challenged the victim about her gender, threatening her at knifepoint and warning: ‘I’ll stab you if you lie.’ The victim, who now suffers from panic attacks and struggles to sleep, said: ‘I am constantly in fear of being assaulted again. I never thought anyone would have so much hatred for me.’ ‘It’s sickening to watch’ REFEREES have been banned from blowing their whistles on a football pitch after angry neighbours made noise complaints. The no-whistle policy means a new £700,000 sports pitch in Kent is now out-of-use. Cornwallis Academy, near Maidstone, promised to ban whistles outside of school hours after the council raised concerns. Despite this, neighbours have complained about the noise of games at evenings and weekends. Now council chiefs have banned the school and sports clubs from using the facilities at all. Neighbour Val Sanderson said: ‘We have no objection to the school use. It’s the out-of-school use that is making our lives a misery.’ Another said they are subjected to ‘loud shouting, screaming, kicking of balls, whistles and fences rattling seven days a week’. The school has produced a noise survey by experts that has shown use of the pitch does not cause unacceptable disturbance. Mason Dixon, spokesman for the Future Schools Trust which runs the Cornwallis Academy, said: ‘The inability to use our state-ofthe-art 3G pitch since August has significantly disrupted our physical education curriculum.’ Article Name:13 years for the trans hate mob who knifed teenager for ‘lying about her gender identity’ Publication:Daily Mail Author:By Rebecca Camber Crime and Security Editor Start Page:8 End Page:8

Trans girl stabbed by masked teenage gang in ‘vicious’ revenge attack The Daily Telegraph17 Jan 2025By Tim Sigsworth A MASKED gang of youths have been captured on CCTV “viciously” stabbing a transgender girl in a revenge attack organised on Snapchat. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was stabbed nine times in Harrow, north-west London, in February last year after she lied about her gender to a boy before giving him oral sex. The hooded and masked gang have now been jailed for the “abhorrent” assault, which the victim only survived because passers-by intervened to help. Summer Betts-ramsey, 20, who carried out the stabbing, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in youth detention on Monday. Judge Philip Katz KC told her she was a “dangerous offender” who continues to pose a risk to the public. Bradley Harris, Camron Osei, and Shiloh Hindes, all 18, were sentenced to three years in youth detention, while a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named, was given a youth rehabilitation order. In January 2024, the girl was with Harris at his house when the pair kissed and she performed oral sex on him, the court heard. Soon afterwards, another friend told Harris the girl was a “tranny”, prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said. She denied it, but when Harris picked up a knife and said: “I’ll stab you if you lie,” she admitted that she was transgender before being told to leave. When Harris told the group she had lied they turned on her, Ms Heer said. On the day of the attack, the girl left home believing she was going to a roller-skating event with them, the court heard. Betts-ramsey, from Barnet; Harris, from Harrow; Osei, from Tadworth, Surrey; Hindes, from Southwark; and the 17-year-old boy were all dressed in dark clothing, with masks and hoods, and were waiting for her at the bus stop. Once at a nearby car park, she was “immediately attacked” and had no time to say anything or defend herself, the court was told. The CCTV footage showed Betts-ramsey stabbing her as the others continued to attack her with kicks and punches for about 45 seconds before leaving the scene. The victim was taken to hospital after members of the public called an ambulance. Ms Heer added that the group later bragged about the assault and taunted the victim on social media. A 17-year-old girl who was not part of the group was also handed a supervision order after the court heard she “joined in” with the attack before robbing the girl’s handbag, the court heard. The 17-year-old boy sent the girl a message which said “Ur lookin sweet”, the court was told. That night, a message was sent to Betts-ramsey which said: “Stabbing a girl cus she’s trans... its disgusting,” to which Betts-ramsey replied: “IT deserved it.” In a victim impact statement read to the court, the girl said she still has “thick scars” as a result of the attack. Handing down his sentence, Judge Katz said the victim had been “viciously assaulted” adding that video footage of the attack was “sickening to watch”. German neo-nazi tries to change gender ‘so he can be sent to a women’s prison’ The Daily Telegraph17 Jan 2025By James Rothwell in Berlin A GERMAN neo-nazi has legally changed his gender in an apparent attempt to be transferred to a women’s prison. Sven Liebich, who was convicted last year on charges of inciting hatred and defamation, is appealing his 18-month jail sentence in of Saxony. But in an unusual twist to his case, Liebich has legally changed gender and now lives under the name Marla-svenja. According to Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, a newspaper in the east German state, Liebich’s appearance has not changed since the gender shift, other than a slight increase in beard length. In a brief statement to the newspaper, Liebich said: “I am afraid of discrimination.” Liebich used the recent reform to Germany’s rules on self-determination, which allow people to change their first name and gender on official documents without a psychiatric assessment. But the change in gender does not necessarily mean Liebich has to be sent to a woman’s prison if his sentence is upheld, according to officials in Saxony. A spokesman for the Halle prosecutor’s office told the Bild newspapaer: “There is no automatic guarantee that a ‘His appearance has not changed since the gender shift, other than a slight increase in beard length’ man will be sent to a women’s prison after changing his gender and name.” They added that a review into the circumstances of the sentence would take place if it was upheld. A spokesman for Germany’s federal criminal register said a change in gender would not impact Liebich’s criminal record. “The physical legal person remains. A change in the civil status law is of secondary importance,” he said. Liebich is well-known in Saxony as the organiser of Montagsdemo, a weekly extreme Right-wing demonstration. He has been photographed wearing a Nazi-style armband and taking part in demonstrations where blackclad protesters brandish red, white and black flags. Saxony’s domestic intelligence services describe Liebich as a “Right-wing extremist” with activity “across the state and nationwide”. The new rules on German gender changes came into force in November 2024, having been proposed by the “traffic light” coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He said at the time: “We show respect to trans, intersex and non-binary people – without taking anything away from others. This is how we continue to drive the modernisation of our country. This includes recognising realities of life and making them possible by law.” Article Name:German neo-nazi tries to change gender ‘so he can be sent to a women’s prison’ Publication:The Daily Telegraph Author:By James Rothwell in Berlin Start Page:13 End Page:13

Civil servant fought Whitehall over trans ideology — and won Eleanor Frances, who sued her own bosses after being forced out of her job, tells Rosamund Urwin why she couldn’t stay silent Eleanor Frances says she was given the impression her views meant she needed to be “educated” Next image › A civil servant has described how a “huge weight has been lifted off” her shoulders after she won an 18-month legal battle with her former employers over her concerns about their promotion of transgender ideology. Eleanor Frances, now 39, felt forced to leave the job she loved in August 2023 after repeatedly raising concerns that her corner of Whitehall had been “captured” by transgender ideology, contrary to the civil service’s commitment to impartiality. Last week, she revealed two Whitehall departments had pledged to revise their guidelines so that civil servants would no longer be labelled “transphobic” for expressing gender-critical beliefs. They also agreed to pay Frances a settlement of £116,749 plus taxes. Speaking in the café of the Institution of Civil Engineers in Westminster, she still seems like the consummate Sir Humphrey. She arrives with notes to ensure no details are forgotten. Civil service speak — “directorates”, “stakeholders” — keeps slipping in. She is discreet, meticulous and private, clamming up on any questions outside the details of her case. Frances, who lives in Oxfordshire and has a PhD in engineering, joined the civil service in 2019. Her role at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) was in developing policy, and she was swiftly promoted to manage a team of six. But by 2021, she started to feel a deep disquiet that her department was accepting a view of identity in which gender overrode biological sex. Colleagues started putting their pronouns in their email signatures. One civil service staffer sent their team a pic- ture of a “gender-bread person” — a model intended to illustrate the complexities of identity. “There are two sides to the debate, but everywhere I looked, I could only see one,” she recalled. “It was everywhere. There were blogs, strategies, and we were encouraged to participate in equality, diversity and inclusion [EDI] discussions in which the material was politicised.” Frances alleged she witnessed colleagues’ political views shaping how they developed policy, which could potentially have implications in DCMS, including for women’s sport. “[Bosses] gave the impression that if you didn’t agree with it, you would need to be ‘educated’ — and that this was the only moral position to take,” she added. “You worry that you’re going to be ostracised by your colleagues if you disagree.” Initially she tried to keep her “head down and stay silent”, but then she tentatively raised the issue with her managers. She was advised not to attend EDI discussions if they made her uncomfortable. MY VIEW’S WORTHY OF RESPECT In August 2022, she considered applying for a promotion that would have made her a senior civil servant. Then she realised she would be assessed by a panel of three junior staff who were “self-selected as EDI champions” and had helped decide the division’s diversity strategy. The panel would assess her commitment to inclusion and tell the hiring manager. Frances thought if she were interviewed she would either make her true view known or feel forced to misrepresent her opinions. “It was an ideological litmus test for entry into the senior civil service,” she said. “I didn’t think I could even say that some people think it’s impossible to change sex, and that’s a view worthy of respect. I didn’t feel I could stay silent any more.” She withdrew her application. There was a litmus test for entry into the senior civil service In autumn 2022, she became aware that DCMS had adopted a gender identity policy, after an assessment by the lobby group Stonewall. “It wasn’t just blogs and discussions now, it was in formal policy,” she said. “It included that the definition of transphobia was the denial of someone’s gender identity. It placed the idea of inclusion above the protections that single-sex services offer to women.” She argued this was unfair on female staff — as the acceptance of “self-ID” meant biological males could now use women’s lavatories — and affected policy. “Single-sex facilities had become mixed, so the department was adopting a position that made it worse to be a woman,” she said. “Additionally, it proscribed gender critical beliefs through the definition of transphobia, which inhibited us from talking accurately about issues.” STAFF WERE FEARFUL In December 2022, Frances wrote to the cabinet secretary, Simon Case, who never replied. “I took this to the very top,” she said. “It asks a lot of you to formalise [a complaint]. It made it necessary to name individuals and name the HR department.” DCMS opened an internal investigation and Frances found a potential witness, but the woman pulled out, fearing she would lose her job. When Frances returned to work in the new year, she was told her department was being restructured. “My role was substantially reduced,” she said. “My team was taken from me, and the people who designed that restructure were the people I’d named in my complaint.” In April 2023, Frances — who had now been transferred to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) — co-ordinated a letter from 42 civil servants raising similar concerns. “It told me how fearful other civil servants were,” she said. “People were even worried about having it on government IT systems — they were scared IT would search their emails.” About three months later, the civil service ended its investigation. Frances said its findings “largely ignored” her arguments. “One of the more bizarre arguments put forward was that if sharing pronouns was a breach of impartiality, then not sharing them was too,” she said. “And this is a complaint about HR and HR policies, but they put a member of HR as a co-ordinator for the investigation.” The response, Frances felt, not only failed to take on board her concerns but misrepresented them. “They described my concerns as that some people might not want to share facilities with a transgender person,” she said. “That’s not what I was saying: I was saying some women might not want to share facilities with a male. I’d be perfectly happy to share facilities with a female who identifies as transgender.” She resigned in August 2023. “I’d been to all of the leadership I could realistically go to,” she said. “I had reached the end of the road. I’d been excluded and ostracised.” She made a claim for victimisation, unfair constructive dismissal and discrimination on the grounds of philosophical belief. The case was due to be heard at an employment tribunal in the spring but the two parties settled in December without liability. The DCMS and DSIT permanent secretaries, Susannah Storey and Sarah Munby, said the new policy “will balance the rights of staff with different protected characteristics, including but not limited to gender reassignment, religion and belief, and sex”. Frances, who has a new job, said the experience had been draining but there were positives. The MP Rosie Duffield and the campaigner Maya Forstater supported her. “The support online has been astounding. I’ve been blown away by that. It has been humbling,” she said. The government said: “We are committed to fostering an inclusive working culture that allows civil servants to safely hold, voice, discuss or challenge any lawful perspective, without fear or favour.”
